“ A new frontier in smart and cost-effective utilities management!”


ROCO has gained a wealth of knowledge through executing our first AMI Prepaid/Postpaid Water Meter Project. The project to supply 150,000 smart ultrasonic water meters is being carried out for a National Water Company in one of the fast-growing economies of West Africa. The core of the business case could be summed up as follows:

·         Increase efficiency of metering with the introduction of ultrasonic water meters. The meters are able to read to three decimal places or liters per hour and have 98% accuracy. This ensures that all water is accounted for and therefore higher revenue for utility companies.

·         Encourage citizens to conserve water by accurately reporting their consumption verses a national target average use (the target usage data will be generated by the software after gathering data from the meters).

·        Increase the efficiency of operations leading to considerable cost savings. The meters can be read remotely and therefore monitoring for issues and routine reading can be done without deploying an army of workers to check meter by meter. This does wonders for the carbon footprint as well since transportation requirements are reduced.

·         Improve customer service and responsiveness through early notification of issues. For example, the meters can detect when there is a leak in the house or apartment, so the owner can be notified.

·         Improve collection of unpaid bills and increase revenue generation. Since the meters are prepaid, they are equipped with a valve that can be automated to close once credit runs out. This encourages customers to pay their bills on time to ensure continued service.

With this brief, ROCO set out to provide a product that would provide all these improvements. We acted as a technical partner on the project; helping to refine the technical requirements based on our experience and knowledge of the capabilities and deficiencies of the technology.


After evaluating a host of solutions and technologies, we settled on an Ultrasonic Water Meter with Integrated Control Valve using a combination of Lora Wireless and GPRS Communication Technology. This was just the start - we then went on to further develop the product in consultation with the client to make sure it would succeed in delivering value and business benefits. Some of the things we changed were the construction material, battery configuration, backlighting and software to name a few. 




       Apart from developing the product, ROCO also consulted on the design and delivery of assembly and test lines for final production steps in the client’s factory. We then went on to run a 2000 meter pilot project with the client to fine tune the final solution.
